“TranzitionzJazz is hosting Remember the Music ONLINE on Sunday, October 4, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. EST. An early evening of great jazz and well-known songs by terrific performers, emceed by Laura Fernandez, the wonderful on-air host of Jazz.FM91’s Café Latino. In addition to TranzitionzJazz, the concert will feature performances by Laura, and by Ilana Waldston and Sam Broverman, both from Recollectiv - a non-profit organization that puts on weekly music events for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. An exciting Toronto jazz chorus - The Jazz Project will perform as will jazz trumpeter Devon Ellis.
We’re thrilled to include in the concert, a performance by the very talented Hilario Durán who wrote and performed the soundtrack for The Cuban. The Cuban is a movie about an elderly Cuban musician with Alzheimer’s (played by Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett Jr.) who is brought out of his shell by his care worker, a young Afghan immigrant. The storyline totally fits with the theme of this concert and will be described in more detail at the concert through an interview between Laura and the director of The Cuban, Sergio Navarretta. For sure this is a concert not to be missed!
Tickets can be purchased by going to the link on our website. General admission is $25, student tickets are $15 and if you want to support a caregiver but can’t attend the concert, you can purchase a caregiver ticket for $25. Net proceeds of the ticket sales go to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto which does amazing work in supporting people with Alzheimer’s and their families and caregivers.
This concert also is about raising money for Alzheimer’s research being conducted by Dr. Michael Thaut of the U of T Faculty of Music and Dr. Corinne Fischer of St. Michael’s Hospital. They are researching how music affects the brains of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. It is exciting and leading-edge research, for which already we have raised over $10,000 and hope to raise more by the time of the concert. If you wish to donate to their research, please go to the link on our website.
This concert is sponsored in part by The Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto, Recollective, U of T Faculty of Music, JAZZ.FM91 Special thanks to Jim Thomas for all of his dedicated efforts in bringing everyone together, organizing, and managing this event to make it a great success.
